The world’s population is projected to grow to over 9 billion people by 2050. In order to feed this many people, food production needs to increase by over 70%. However, food systems are fast approaching their environmental production capacities. Due to limited availability, there is likely to be a substantial shortfall in livestock and crop production, leading to higher prices. This calls into question the sustainability of long-term supply and makes the search for alternative and sustainable protein an area of critical importance.
